Teachers are regarded as one of the significant elements in the new curriculum reform, which advocates transforming teachers' teaching conceptions. In this background, to study teachers' conceptions of teaching is necessary and important.The research focuses on identifying middle school English teachers' holistic conceptions of teaching and analyzing individual conceptions of teaching in two situations: normal teaching and public teaching. Qualitative approach is employed for the two focuses: phenonmenographic approach, which is adopted to explore conceptions of teaching, is used for the first focus to obtain data, and interview, class observation and document analysis are used for the second one to obtain data. 28 teachers are selected as samples for the first focus, and 3 teachers, one of whom is the core, are selected from 28 samples to analyze individual teachers conceptions of teaching. The research results include as follows: Identifying four teaching conceptions, which are Knowledge Delivery, Exam Preparation, Learning Promotion, and Growing Promotion; and identifying two higher-level orientations, which are Teacher-centered and Student-centered. Analyzing the individual teachers' conceptions of teaching in two situations. In the normal teaching situation, different individual teachers' conceptions of teaching are different; while in the public teaching situation, teachers' conceptions of teaching are identical.
