The Study Of Cultivating Science Literacy By Penetrating STS Education Ideology Into Physics Teaching

In the multicultural background, people have to insist on studying,judging,makingchoices,adjusting their strategies and behavior with the changes of society and ideology. Allvalue judgment systems are based upon the knowledge of cognition field,(Vandenberg,1990)and if a man wants to make right judgments and adapt himself to the changes of oursociety, he has to heighten his science literacy, because science literacy is not only the base ofcomprehending the value of technology,forming right values and making right decisions, butalso the base of a country to participate in international competition. At the same time, we cansee that science brings for us more and more happiness, at the same time, it brings more andmore problems,such as the crisis of energy sources,greenhouse effect,the destruction ofozone and so on. Faced with these problems, how to understand the new development ofscience, how to cultivating the public science literacy, how to build up the right values, are thechallenges for school education. We know schools are the most important fields to cultivatescience literacy of the public, and as part of school education, physics teaching mustcontribute to cultivate science literacy. But the conception of the science literacy is veryrecondite, and it includes science consciousness ,science ability,science attitude and so on.The traditional physics teaching is advanced in acquiring knowledge and technology, butdisadvantageous in cultivating science consciousness and science ability. The national scienceconfederation and UNESCO thought that STS education was the first choice in cultivating thestudents'science literacy at the special topic meeting which was hold in Melbourne in 1980.Because it is the new educational value whose aim is cultivating the all-powerful public.
