The Private Universities And The Modernization Of Native Higher Education

There are many private universities besides the Missionary Universities in the first half of the 20^th century in China. They appeared together with the National Universities, and ended when the People's Republic of China was founded. They contributed greatly to. the modernization of Chinese education inevitably. So, it is important to evaluate them properly as one part of the higher education history. In this thesis, the author tries to represent the process of the Private Universities' development and the reform of them on the basis of historical materials, and then gets the conclusion that the Private Universities accelerate the process of modernization of education. At the end of this thesis, the author comes up with a few of suggestions for the development of the present private education.The Private University experienced four stages from appearing to ending in modern China. The author clears up the clue of the Private Universities' development, summarizes their traits in different stages, and even analyzes the cause of development at every stage.The Private University contributed greatly to the higher education reform in modern China.
