With the arrival of the 21st century and faced with the ever-changing society, every country attaches great importance to the reform of their elementary and secondary education and considers it a key measure in the development of their national culture, the build-up of the new society and the strengthening of comprehensive power of the nation. As a nation knows for placing considerable priority to education, Japan revised its curriculum standard, and issued the new Course of Study. The new curriculum is intended to solve the existing problems in education, to reflect the contemporary educational theory and practice and to face the challenge of the future. Based on the study of "the Course of Study" of Japan, this paper tries to investigate the reforming process of the Japanese language teaching curriculum after the Second World War and dissects its characteristics and deficiencies, analyses the tendency of its reform, and acquires some useful enlightenments and ideas for the elementary Chinese language teaching in the new century.
