Education is undertaking the historical missions of vitalizing our economy and invigorating the Chinese nation with the implementing of the strategy of "Developing China Through Science and Education". Schools are shouldering the heavy responsibilities of completely promoting quality-oriented education and conscientiously earnestly carrying out the guiding ideology of "health is the foremost". As an indispensable part of school education, physical education imparts on students knowledge and skills of building up strong constitutions, develops their athletic abilities and good exercising habits, and accelerates their physical growth. It is one of the important parts and breakthrough points of quality-oriented education. The physical education teachers are the key to the development of school physical education. As to whether they can bring into full play the role of school physical education in quality education or not, the key lies in their professional qualities.At present, the middle school physical education teachers' professional qualities are playing vital roles in the fulfillment of the guiding ideology of "health is the foremost" and the National New Curriculum Criterion of physical education and health. The present study aims to explore the present situations of the middle school Physical education teachers' professional qualities in Lanzhou by means of questionnaires.The results show that the middle school physical education teachers' overall levels of ideological, psychological and physical standards are high; the level of competence standards is moderate and the global development is unbalanced. Moreover, based on the objective discussion and analysis of the present situations and the reality of the local economy, culture and education, this thesis puts forward scientific, rational and time-characteristic measures and suggestions for the pre-job training of the future middle school physical education teachers and the post-job training of the on-the-job physical education teachers, thus strengthening and promoting their professional qualities and providing the theoretical basis and practical support for the improvement of the network and system of physical educationteachers' pre- and post-job training.The thesis consists of 5 parts. Part One is a general introduction, providing some background and overview of the topic. It mainly introduces the purpose and significance of choosing the topic. Part Two reviews the previous research on physical education teachers' professional qualities and points out that most studies on this topic focused on the analysis of the compositions of physical education teachers' professional qualities and the ways to enhance their qualities. Although there are some empirical studies, the features of local education development are not covered, which is the originality of this thesis. Part Three outlines the theoretical bases from perspectives of conceptions concerned and quality structures of physical education teachers' professional qualities. The empirical study comes in Part Four in which Middle school physical education teachers' professional qualities in Lanzhou are investigated and analyzed, and the research method and the results of data analysis are introduced. Besides, based on the research results, the author puts forward some measures to improve the physical education teachers' professional qualities. Part Five is the conclusion which summarized the research findings of this study, and presents implications for physical education, the limitations of the study and suggestions for future research.
