Knowledge and ability, has been the eternal theme in teaching. Capacity is a precondition to the growth of knowledge, and knowledge is in turn the base for improving capability, they are complementary and be transformed into each other under certain conditions. Whether geographic teaching is successful or not, the key lies in improving the students' ability in geography subject, but at present, The geographic subject ability study is still in its backward state relatively. It is not only behind their foreign counterparts, but also behind the other subjects' study in domestic.This article is composed of three parts. The first part, by looking up some documents, the author analyzes and synthesizes the geography ability goal of some developed countries' present geographic curriculum standards, and different periods of our geographic curriculum standards (syllabus),and combine the experts' views in domestic .in this way, the author has concluded that secondary geographical ability system should contain seven capacities.1. Capacity of grasping the basic knowledge.2. Capacity of geographic information processing.3. Capacity of geographic thinking.4. Capacity of question and explore.5. Capacity of geographic practice.6. Capacity of geographic communication.In the second part, The author analyses the basic characteristics of ability elements';from the surveys, the author know the status of the students' geography ability;Starting from the teaching practice, I made aplan for improving students' geography ability.The third part, the author think, it's of great important to develop the students' geographic capacity .Mean while it is also important that we should combine the capacity with the non-intellectual factors.
