Textbooks are not only the indispensable composition of school education, but also one of best ways to express the educational belief of the country. The compilation and use of textbooks decide the methods of teaching, as well as have a great effect on students' learning. Therefore, the changes of textbooks have always been focused. The evolution of the primary mandarin textbooks during the past 100 years is certainly the epitome of modern Chinese mandarin education. From the end of Qing dynasty and old China to new China, great changes have taken place in the appearance of mandarin textbooks. To analyze the evolution of textbooks in respects of contents, forms and usages and to discover its regularity will play a very important role in the new reform of the fundamental education, because the reform of education is the reform of textbooks to a great extent. This thesis intends to the evolution trend of the primary mandarin textbooks by means of historical research methods and contrastive research methods. There are four parts in the thesis. The first part illustrates the connotation and function theoretically to prove that the way in which people define the problem is changing with the times. In the new century, it is generally thought that the textbooks' connotation is expanding and the textbooks' function is converting. It supplies the theoretical basis for the research in the evolution regularity of primary mandarin textbooks in our country. The second part is the general introduction about the evolution of the primary mandarin textbooks. It collects, distinguishes and arranges the relative historical materials of Chinese primary mandarin textbooks in the last 100 years. Meanwhile, along with table contrasts, it lists the big events of the textbooks construction during the three periods of written national language textbooks, language written and spoken textbooks, and mandarin textbooks, and at the same time analyzes the characteristics of main textbooks in every period to study the developing situations of primary mandarin textbooks. The third part is the summary of the revolution regularity of primary mandarin textbooks. From the views of textbooks' content construction, compiling stylistic rules and layout, compiling group, function, value orientation, and the institution of textbooks' compilation and observation of the country, it contrasts the textbooks' changes of different periods, and reveals the regularity of the primary mandarin textbooks' evolution. After that, it analyzes the causes of regularity through the subject of mandarin itself and the development of society. The fourth part is the thoughts of improving the function of primary mandarin textbooks. Firstly, it illustrates the ideal framework of mandarin textbooks.
