Elite-mass University And Research On The Location Of Running

Since the 1990s, the Chinese higher education has transformed from elite to mass. With the amounts of students of university expanded ,Chinese universities are confronted with how to locate renewedly. During the transformation process, the key universities, which were always regarded as elite education, also embark on broadening enrollment. Therefore, the thesis puts forword a concept of elite-mass university against the background. It mainly explores why and how to run elite-mass universities. Elite and mass education are mutually opposite educational systems, that the process of different countries' massification of higher education is also a process of the conflicts and collaboration of elite and mass educations. With the analysis of Martin Trow's and Tian Ye Yu Fu's theory of massification, the thesis puts forword a concept of elite-mass university which engages in both mass and elite education, and that elite-mass universities are an important path to harmonize these conflicts. Different countries have the different forms of elite-mass universities and takes American State University for an example. With the analysis of Ashby's theory of "ecology of university", the thesis concludes the main features of the State University and its influencing factors. Finally it concretely studies the University of Texas at Austin (UT)as a case and finds some features of an elite-mass university mainly including the university-running idea and fostering talents. The UT pursues after the unit of excellence and serving the society in terms of the running idea and after the harmonious development of mass and elite higher education in terms of the talents' cultivation idea. The heritance and environment of most key universities limits them to become elite-mass universities. The thesis gives some responding suggestions to the location of the university-running idea and fostering talents.
