Mental health is an important part of the contemporary view of health and a goodpsychological state provides a guarantee for both study and life of college students.Today's social progress and the advancement of science and technology bring greatconvenience and comfort for college students, however, there also come somenegative influences including the increase of psychological imbalance and kinds ofmental barriers. Since physical education advocates the top priority of health, muchattention must be paid to psychological health of students. Body building exercise fitsmental characteristics of college students and enjoys a great popularity among them.It has many kinds of functional properties and can promote the mental health ofcollege students. This paper aims to help college students set up a good attitudetowards health, establish a healthy, civilized and scientific lifestyle and lay thetheoretical foundation for body building exercise becoming a kind of college students'lifestyle.This study mainly discusses the following issues: (1) an outline of mental healthof college students;(2) the functional properties and characters of body buildingexercise that can help promote the mental health;(3) the health level andcharacteristics of students who choose body building exercise as their optional course;(4) the influences of different amounts of body building exercise on psychologicalhealth;(5) the theoretical base that body building exercise can improve collegestudents' mental health.The study adopts such an approach as random sample and chooses 672 studentsfrom five colleges or universities of Shandong Province as the research objects. Someof these students choose body building exercise as their optional course and some donot. It uses the forms of symptom check list 90 and grading of body building exerciseamount form and adopts SPSS13.0 to analyze the statistics.The main research results are as follows:1. Mental health is an important part of the contemporary view of health, and isthe essential qualification and foundation for all-around development of a collegestudent and an important guarantee for his growing. College students shouldovercome both mental illness and "the third state" and finally achieve the ideal state:self-realization. Since college education puts health in the most important place, themental health of college students must be emphasized.2. From the point view of its effect on college students' mental health, bodybuilding exercise's characteristics as "human-controlled", "instinctive", rhythmical,creative, artistic and comprehensive contribute to its special functions compared withthe other courses .3. The principal psychological problems of college students include forcing,interpersonal relations, crankiness, melancholy, hostility according to the results ofSCL-90 forms done by 672 college students.4. In terms of "forcing", "interpersonal relations", "melancholy", "anxiety" and"psychosis", students who have chosen body building exercise as their optional courseare greatly different from those who do no(tP≤0.001)and their average score is lowerthan that of the comparative group. This proves that the course of body buildingexercise plays an important role in the improvement of students' mental health incollege education.5. Moderate amount of body building exercise provides a better effect than littleor great amount of exercise.According to the above analysis and the reality of college students' mental healthand development of body building exercise, corresponding proposals are put forward.They are as follows: on the one hand, the amount of body building exercise differsbecause of different physical states of college students. Therefore, body buildingexercisers are advised to limit their exercising amount into a medium arrange and tocontrol the intensity, time and frequency of exercise in order to achieve the best effect.On the other hand, in the course of teaching body building exercise, teachers shouldteach in accordance with students' aptitude, carefully note mental changes of studentsand cultivate their psychological qualities consciously. They should teach students touse exercise prescription in a right way, help them to make a scientific plan ofexercise intensity, time and frequency according to their own physical states and lay agood foundation for their lifelong physical education.
