| Humboldt(K.W.Humboldt 1767—1835)was a great educationist and reformer in the history of Germany. Cai Yuanpei(1868—1940) was a famous educationist and reformer in the history of our country. One of them went by the name of"Father of University in Modern times of the World", and the other was passed as"Father of University in Modern times of China". Both as the originators of modern university in east and west, they had much the same in their theory and ideas. However, they also had many differences, these differences were regarded as the source, so they had a great effect on the later world. They both had great contribution on education especially on university development. Humboldt set up Berlin University which had great effect on the universities of Germany, and then became the model in the world. Cai Yuanpei had been effect much by the spirit of Berlin University. He reformed Beijing University, made it became the former of cradle of new culture and modern university education in China. Their ideas of education were precious wealth, the importance had not decreased by the process of time. Comparing their thoughts about university innovations and practices will have great meaning in reformation and development in higher education of our country.There are five parts in this study. Chapter one summarized all Humboldt and Cai Yuanpei's ideas about university innovations and practices; Chapter two of the paper compared the resemblances about their ideas and their university innovations and practices while Chapter three of the paper compared the differences ,this chapter firstly compared the differences of their thinking about university innovation ,and then their practices about university innovation.
