There is a distinct tendency that more and more works of Wang Zengqi has been adopted into the Chinese textbooks for middle school students. This essay explores how to teach his works in the textbooks, especially how to give prominence to thecharacteristics of his works------combination of native traits and modern consciousness.On the one hand, his works, embodies our native characteristics and combines perfectly the classic literature and the folk literature. The works reflects our traditional ideology of Confucianism and Taoism., deeply influenced by the classics in its styles, expressive techniques and language . Wang Zengqi favors the folk culture and focuses his attention on folk customs and lifestyles, especially the life of common people in the lower level of society. Linguistically he absorbs colloquial terms among folks, and grammatically he makes a great amount of creations based on the features of Chinese language. On the other hand, modern consciousness glistens in his works. Influenced by Modernism of Western literature, he behaves as one of forerunners of Modern School of Chinese literature in 1980'. There are also numerous creativities in the types of literature, individual styles and discourses of his works. Taking Shoujie and Hudong Wenhua as samples, this essay tries to demonstrate how to organize the teaching of his works in the textbooks by examining how the author's "native characteristics" and " " are manifested in variety of respects in his works, so that the students could appreciate the unique charm of the classics, native customs and creativities in his works.
