In recent years, the educational value of the classic works isincreasing appreciated. It is realized that the classic works, as thesource of the national spirit and the crystal of civilization, are the recordsof the highest wisdom of a nation and carries the great thoughts of thegreat ancient minds. It is also realized that reading the classical works issupplementary to the current education which is lack of humanisticelements.As the reading of the classic works is still in its early stage, there arequite some issues to be addressed, in both theory and practice. Despitethe dispute on it, it is necessary to carry on the researches.In this paper, the reading of the classic works is discussed with focuson “elementary education”, taking school S as the sample of research;in the case study, the education management is examined and thepurposes, contents, methods and approaches are discussed. Inaddition, several constructive recommendations are put forward toimprove the classic works education.This paper contains4chapters:Chapter Ⅰ is an introduction, including the rationale, objective andsignificance of the study, the aim of the study; as well as the contentand methods of research; the definition of the concepts; and literatureresearch on this topic.Chapter Ⅱ describes the objectives, contents, methods andapproaches of the reading of Chinese classic works.Chapter Ⅲ is a case study on School S (an elementary school), inwhich a questionnaire survey is done to understand the current situationof reading of classic works in elementary school, including theunderstanding of this practice among teachers, the objective of thepractice, the selection of the material, the methods of reading, the effect and the evaluation of effect.Chapter Ⅳ is the reflection of reading classic works in elementaryschool by associating the practice with the theory. Somerecommendations are also made to optimize the management, enrichthe forms and methods and to strengthen the training to teachers.This paper serves the purpose to promote the reading of classicworks in elementary school by discussion of this practice throughanalyzing the issues and leveraging the experience gained in theSchool S.
