A Study On Personalities Of Rural Hometown-remained Children

Rural hometown-remained children refer to the children whose parents went to other areas, they are remained in the residence taking after by other people for more than one year, and most of them are under the age of 16. Rural hometown-remained children are special group in the new period of modern China, there are aroused widespread concern and controversy. How is the development of these children? And what are their characteristics? Are they problem children or not? Those are hot topics of concern to parents and educators.For the fully understand of rural hometown-remained children's personality characteristic, in this research , questionary test(Y-G test), projective test(T-TAT ), task test (SK-Kraepelin Test)are used to analyze 242 rural hometown-remained children and common children's personality in Jiangxi province. We found that the rural hometown-remained children are more biased, easily suspicious, introverted, lack of self-confidence, easily sad and low self-esteem. As the character type, 38% of rural hometown-remained children belong to the unstable, unadaptable type, 18% of them belong to stable, negative adaptable type. Rural hometown-remained children also show stronger desire for power, love and belonging. Those needs are mainly come from family and society. Though they take negative attitude, they feel happy life. The mental activity of them is initiative, persevering, concentrated, emotion stable, their personality and behavior are normal.We also have observed the difference of every personality dimensions, it came out that girls are more negative and experience less misfortune about life than boys, there are differences between boys and girls in assault and imagination aspect. Compare to girls , boys are more introverted and not like to speak out their opinion and feeling. As to initiative , perseverance, concentration, emotional stability, willingness aspects, there is no difference between boys and girls, while boys are more quick ,rhythmic and passionate than girls when they deal with problems. Compare to foster children, boarding children have much more desire of admitting and the other desires which come from family and society . foster children have the higher score in neurotic and emotion changeability aspect, while there are no significant difference between those two groups in those dimensions such as speed, rhythm, passion, initiative, perseverance, concentration, emotional stability, willingness. We also found that the length of time remained in hometown without parents has a certain impact on the development of children's personalities, longer remained in the hometown more assaultive the child is .As to the personality difference, rural hometown-remained children have stronger unmet needs of love and home than common children, this difference is most obvious than other aspect like the need for power. This result indicated that rural hometown-remained children are more eager to parents' concern and love, attach more importance to the emotional exchanges with parents.We also attempted to analyze the cause of the rural hometown-remained children's unique personality characteristic. We hold on the view that the disorder of parents-children relationship and the lack of parents' supervision and behavior model led to the unique personality. We found that guardians of rural hometown-remained children have very significant impact on their personality development as well. The intervene strategies to the adverse personality factors from family, school, community and government aspects is presented in this dissertation.
