The writing ability is a comprehensive ability, which embodies the students' cognitive ability, emotional development and the level of expression in words and it also involves a wide range of knowledge, experience, theory, concept, morality and aesthetic perception, etc. It can be said to be the main criteria to measure the students' level of Chinese .Diary plays a special part in raising the pupils' writing ability .At present, however, there appear a lot of problems in the pupils' diary writing and teaching .What this article studies is aimed at finding some teaching means or tactics to appropriate to the pupils' diary teaching of today by conducting a scientific investigation, analysis and study of it. And this article, using the methods of documentary evidence, visit or interview and investigation, draws good things or nutrition from writing instruction practiced in modern or ancient times and in China or elsewhere, probes into the diary teaching theory and analyses and approaches the existing problems in the present diary teaching.The whole article has the following seven parts:Part One (introduction) differentiates diary and related concept such as composition, writing and creation and, at the same time, explains the object, range, aim and method of study and theoretical basis for it.Part Two(historic track of diary teaching)systematizes enlightenment on writing given by ancient rudimentary writing instruction, some experience in modern diary teaching and the requirements of the pupils' diary teaching prescribed in "Criteria of Chinese Course" and the teaching material of Chinese in primary school.Part Three (investigation of the pupils' diary and analysis of the problems) makes a written investigation of diary writing and teaching in three provinces and analysis of information acquired through investigation.Part Four( pondering over the pupils' diary) tells that the author carries out a theoretical analysis of and ponders deeply over the difference between diary and composition and the necessity of the pupils' diary writing.Part Five (probe into the pupils' diary teaching) is about the author who divides the diary writing into some periods and gives corresponding teaching inethods or tactics on experience for the teachers' reference.Part Six (appraisal of the pupils' diary) raises principles and ways of appraising the pupils' diary and appraises some pieces of writing chosen from different periods of primary school.Part Seven (discussion about the pupils' diary teaching) talks about something we have to pay attention to in the diary teaching and makes some suggestions about "Criteria Of Chinese Course", teaching material of Chinese in primary school and the diary writing.Diary teaching plays an important part not only in training the pupils' writing ability but also in improving the pupils' moral character, raising their living grade and protecting their psychological health. Therefore we need to take it seriously and practice it continuously.
