With the deepening and the development of the reform in new curriculum in China, the diversity versions in English textbooks under the guidance of National Curriculum Standards have replaced the situation of "one textbook according to one standard" . Textbooks play a different role in present teaching and learning process since textbooks are not considered as "the Bible" but as learners' tools and learning sources. Therefore, what should teachers do to analyze and evaluate the quality of textbooks, how do they understand the curriculum and linguistic theories which are reflected in the new textbooks and how can they apply textbooks in a scientific way? To answer all the questions needs further studying.The New Century Junior English (Experimental edition) is composed by shanghai Foreign Studies University according to the essence of the second national curriculum reform and published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, which is lack of an overall analysis and evaluation at present. This thesis is trying to analyze its textual characters and its data collected through questionnaire and interview research so as to put an overall study on it.There are five chapters in this thesis. The first chapter is an introduction. It introduces the background information of this research and clarifies the study's aim and significance. Then it presents its contents and methods. In this chapter, you may also find some important definitions related to the research. At the end of the chapter, the framework of the thesis is mentioned. The second chapter summarizes the research on textbooks and points out the new trends based on the nature and the function of textbooks. It also analyses the standards, the contents and the methods of textbook evaluation, which are the guidelines for this textbook evaluation. What's more, it introduces the recent research on the editing and the evaluation of textbooks in China providing this thesis with the reference. The third chapter analyses the textual characters of the textbook through six different angles including its principles, structural systems, design, contents, language contents and language skills. The fourth chapter studies the textbook's applied situation in teaching and learning and collects the quality data through questionnaire, interview, and observation in a class. The last chapter focuses on the further thoughts on how to improve the arrangement of the textbook and how teachers teach it. In this part, I explain the abilities that a teacher should bear if he/she wants to teach this textbook well and provides some methods in rearrangement of the textbook. At last I give some suggestions on task-based activities in the textbook teaching for teachers.I hope this thesis will give some reference to the improvement of the textbook and also a few suggestions on a better understanding and use of it.
