China is a great nation of poetry, with a lot of brilliant works such as "Shi jing (Book of Songs) " and "Chuci (Chinese ancient poetry) " as well as the well-known poems in Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties and a lot of outstanding poets like the seven great poets in Jian' an period in Eastern Han Dynasty, and Tao Yuanming, a great poet in Eastern Jin Dynasty. All these are the precious heritage from our great ancestors. To learn from them critically and creatively is of great importance in helping to form students' good personalities and their national spirits as well. However, currently, the teaching of poetry in high schools doesn' t seem to bring about such an effective result.The present researcher explores how the cultural spirits are inherited through the teaching of Chinese ancient poetry in high schools from three necessary factors in teaching process, namely, teaching materials, teachers and teaching methods as well.Chapter one focuses on teaching materials, reviewing lists of ancient poems in high school Chinese text book from 1956 to 2000 vertically and examining the lists of poems in various Chinese textbooks since 2001 horizontally. By doing so, the researcher suggests that the quantity of the pomes selected should be enlarged, the poems to be selected should be carefully examined and the teachers should be encouraged to join in the selection of the materials. All of these provide a good material base for the effective inheriting and development of the traditional cultural spirits.Chapter two mainly concentrates on the roles of high school Chinese teachers, illustrating the requirements for the teachers' good qualities in helping students inheriting the cultural spirits, discussing the current situation of Chinese teachers in the high schools, and pointing out such strategies to improve their qualities as providing a relaxed teaching context for teachers, promoting the further-education system, and helping teachers make self-process. Therefore, this chapter mainly provides a human support for the effective inheriting and development of the traditional cultural spirits.Chapter 3 discusses the inheriting of cultural spirits from the aspect of teaching methods, analyzing the problems encountered in the methodologies of teaching Chinese ancient poems, and further pointingout the strategies for improvement--- vigorously constructing thecultural classes, flexibly using the various teaching methods, carefully selecting teaching aspects, and continuously optimizing teaching methods as well as concretely setting real-life examples. This chapter lays a very important meaning in the exploration of the suitable teaching methods for students' inheriting cultural spirits through Chinese ancient poems.
