Multimedia computer-assisted language learning (MCALL) is one of the most important aspects in the research of foreign language teaching and learning. MCALL can best facilitate and motivate students' independent learning and active learning by taking advantage of multimedia computer's integration of text, sound, graph, image and animation to present the learning content in an efficient way.The application of multimedia and net resources in foreign language teaching will inevitably lead to the reform of teaching thoughts and teaching methods. How to improve the ability of studying English by modern teaching technology, and the ability of applying English. What are the advantages and disadvantages of MCALL, and how about it's effectiveness in contrast to traditional class teaching. All these are hot topic of study in recent years. The present study shows that students are the masters of studying and the constructer of knowledge. It also probes how to apply MCALL to situational English teaching by the guiding of theories and practice.This thesis has reviewed the relevant theories related to multimedia assisted teaching, such as constructivism and theories of second language acquisition. Guided by these theories, the author has conducted a one-year experiment of multimedia assisted English teaching in a junior middle school .The experiment shows that multimedia assisted English teaching has many advantages. It has overcome students' passivity in the traditional English teaching, and it can arouse the motivation, enthusiasm and initiative of the students. The teaching effect has been greatly improved as well.This thesis includes seven chapters.Based on an analysis of the English teacher's ability to apply MCALL and a careful study of the English Curriculum Standards for Full-time Compulsory Education and High School (Experimental Edition), Chapter One expatiates the backgrounds and significances of this study and puts forward its characteristics and creativities.Chapter Two begins with the definition of MCALL and situational teaching in this paper and gives an overview of the development of MCALL. And it also describes the theories related to Multimedia assisted English teaching.Chapter Three illustrates some basic principles of MCALL that makes it incomparable to the traditional English classroom teaching. Chapter Four expounds the application of situational teaching based on MCALL including teaching methods, teaching approaches and teaching principles. It illustrates how multimedia computer can indeed assist English teaching and learning in high schools with an example of teaching.Chapter Five is an introduction of the procedures of the experiment carried out in the study.Chapter Six reports and discusses the result of the experiment by presenting data analysis and some interviews with teachers and students, which find out the cause that MCALL can improve the ability of studying English .Chapter Seven draws a conclusion and offers some suggestions.
