The Study Of The Spirit Of Shu-yuan

Shu-yuan oringinating from Tang and prospering in Song, via the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, has lasted as long as a thousand years in China., which is a unique educational organizations and academic institutions in China's feudal society. In the long and tortuous process of development, Shu-yuan has developed its own unique and vibrant spiritual connotation,"Shu-yuan Spirit". Shu-yuan Spirit in the history of China had a profound impact on the community as well as intellectuals, and there is great realistic significance until today.In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this paper is divided into four parts:In the first part, based on the analysis by the research results as well as my own experience, the author concluded that Shu-yuan was manifested mainly in the spirit of "openness and tolerance", "teaching and academic research freedom." "Independence" and "Hotel Road patriotic", and analysed the performance of the four aspects.In the second part, based on the history of the development of Chinese culture, the author thought because of the succession of China's tradition of Private School, the increase in Civil private collection and reading, government support for cultural policy, the decline of official school and the forces of confrontation and integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, Shu-yuan was flourishing in China. In the course of the development of Shu-yuan, because of the influence of ancient Chinese tradition of the private school, Confucian heritage and the influence of Buddhism and Taoism, School Spirit formed. After that, Shu-yuan spirit influenced the society and the scholars, which contributed the prevalence of the social research and made the scholars form a strict academic attitude and do well in being a person or an official.The third part talks about that considering the political, cultural reason and Shu-yuan itself, feudal rulers took measures to control Shu-yuan. That bureaucratized Shu-yuan gradually, which also made the Shu-yuan spirit restricted. At the end of Qing Dynasty, the college system was abolished, Shu-yuan, which had a long history of thousand years,have reached the end of it's history. But it does not represent the end of the spirit of Shu-yuan, because the profound impact which Shu-yuan spirit made on the Chinese literati can't vanish with the system. In modern times, China gradually formed the university model which mainly imitated the model of Western university. To further promote the traditional Chinese spirit of Shu-yuan and to preserve the national characteristics of Chinese University, many modern scholars made unremitting efforts.In the fourth part, the author talks about that China established her own modern university imitating Western countries, but with the development of the times. Its drawbacks emerge. In view of this situation, a large number of Chinese intellectuals have proposed that we should not abandon our traditional Chinese culture. They strongly advocated that we should transform our university based on the integration of the advanced model of Western University College and Chinese traditional experience of Shu-yuan model. Since the 1980s and 1990s, the University deviated from the course gradually in the process of adapting modern society and providing comprehensive services to the community .The spiritual characteristics of University are disappearing slowly, which caused a spiritual crisis in university. Faced with this situation, the study of the spirit of university becomes a hot issue. The scholars began to directly express their deepest thoughts and think about rebuilding the spirit of the Chinese University. Following our ancestors in the final period after China, the author propounds that Chinese traditional Shu-yuan spirit has Chinese nationality. To build the spirit of Chinese modern university, we not only have to learn from the foreign countries, but also have to law on ancient Chinese tradition to build a free, independent, tolerant and humanism spirit of university with our national character.
