It has been more than one hundred and twenty years since the foundation of the first American research university, Johns Hopkins University. Yet the research universities were imitated by many other countries contribute a lot in politics, economy and culture for the States. According to the history of the U.S., as the central part of the higher education system, undergraduate education plays always an essential role which is insupplantable. However, things have changed since the establishment of the Johns Hopkins. That is, the postgraduate education has been regarded of greater significant while the undergraduate belittled. And the bomb in the malformation education system in research universities finally exploded in 1960s.Tracking the development of undergraduate courses in the U.S., the paper explores the motivity of revolution in American and elicits some universal cognition to guide the construction of the undergraduate education system in China.The article is composed of six chapters:The preface introduces the purpose of the topic briefly and the latest researches in this area are presented, as well as the method used in the disquisition.In the second part, the definitions related to the topic are explained. And also, the research field and object of the paper is pointed out by the analysis of undergraduate courses and research universities in America.The third section divides the history of American undergraduate education in research universities into four eras. That is, the period of"individuality education"under the principle of utility, the period of"responsibility"education which attached importance to commonness, the period which capability is proposed and the period of innovation. The forth part is aimed at the research universities today and of which seven features are concluded.The fifth part explores the reason of revolutions in American research universities. Society crises, science development and the inner conflicts are what I conclude.The last part concluded that the education revolutions indicate the different theory from different eras. And the experience of American education is summarized as a template to our own country.
