The issue of the National Guidelines for PE Curriculum Reform in Institutions of Higher Learning ( Guidelines for short) in August 2002 signifies the culmination of a new round of national PE curriculum reform. In the Guidelines brand-new notions are presented on the guiding ideology, objectives, structure, contents and methods of PE curriculum, and new requirements are advanced on the further construct of PE curriculum. As one base of national higher education, Anhui Province, has encountered many difficulties and problems to study and solve during the four years of PE curriculum construction under the guidance fo the new Guidelines. The thesis investigates the actualities and tendency of college PE curricular reform in Anhui. It surveys ten randomly sampled colleges and universities in Anhui, summarizes experiences and insufficiencies during the four years, and puts forward corresponding proposals, hopefully to serve as reference for the enhancement of Anhui's PE curricular reform. The survey of students and PE teachers in the ten universities are carried out through literature research, questionnaire, consultaion and mathematical statistics. Results show:1 PE course in most of the colleges and universities in Anhui province is arranged as follows: it is taught as a general course for freshmen and a selective course for sophomores while it is taught for juniors and seniors in only a small amount of colleges and universities, not to mention some planned extracurricular sports and competitions, which constitutes a combination with curricular teaching.2 The past several years have seen, in most of the colleges and universities, an increase in the sports events and most of them are to the students'liking. However, this still fails to meet the demand of college and university students. Besides, the theoretic teaching in the present PE materials in the province has been neglected to a great extent and most of the teaching is devoted to the analysis of kinematics and explanation of the knowledge about Olympics.3 PE teachers tend to resort to such traditional teaching methods as explanation, demonstration, repeating practice and analysis. They seldom adopt those methods that are of help to enriching students'sensibility and improving their personality as well as their ability to communicate with others. Moreover, in most of the colleges and universities the course is taught for different classes from the same department, sometimes from different departments, which basically conforms to the requirements prescribed in the National Guiding Principles for PE Teaching in Colleges and Universities.4 Most of the teaching is devoted to the teachers'evaluation which is mainly intended for students'physical ability and their sports skills, resulting in the lack of the emphasis on the enrichment of students'sensibility and the improvement of their team spirit.5 PE course for non-PE majors in the colleges and universities in the province is going to be reformed as follows: The course is going to be taught as a selective course for freshmen and beyond;PE teachers are expected to have more say in the organization and administration of extracurricular sports and competitions;Teaching materials in the course will be diversified and practicalised;More emphasis will be focused on the body-building purpose than on the competitiveness; The objects of the course evaluation will be extended to a larger range.
