As a developed theory of Cognition Learning Theory, Independent Learning Theory has been a very popular learning theory in the West. It puts learning and teaching in a completely new sense, thus providing us a different view of looking at education. As an ability to learn, independent learning not only contributes to the improvement of students'performance at school, but also lays the foundation of their lifelong study and development. Instead, the present high school physics teaching is mainly directed by Behaviorism Learning Theory, which, though going with the class teaching focusing on teaching facts, can never meet the real aim of education: the real value of education lies in the sound development of qualities of human beings. The future is a learning society, which calls for us to acquire, apply and create new knowledge, therefore, independent learning will be one of the most effective learning methods. Through careful study of a large quantity of documents, the author gives independent learning a definition and expounds its characteristics. With developing students'subjective activity and independence its main aim, independent learning requires teachers to design the teaching activity as an interaction between the teacher and students, during which students learn actively and independently under the teacher's encouragement and instruction. Through interviews, observation, inquiries and discussions, the author searches for theoretical support and practical strategies and designs two cases aimed at improving students'independent learning ability and carries out a series of tests on"instruction--independent learning"based on the survey of present high school independent learning situation and the achievement gained in the field. After a year's teaching practice, studies have shown that students have made progress in study habits, self-inquiries and practical ability as well as in interest and motive in the study of chemical.
