Being aimed at the slow steps to popularize English course in primary school, low quality of education and instruction, old teaching method and so on in Linxia minority nationality region, the researcher has carried out the application research on participatory approach in primary school English teaching in Jishishan Bao'an, Dongxiang, Sala autonomous county in Linxia. The purpose of this research is: how to implement participatory approach in English classroom teaching in primary school to promote instruction reform in Linxia minority nationality region, to improve English teaching quality in primary school, and to explore an effective teaching and learning strategies, so as to combine education theory and practice. At the same time, with the further advance of the new curriculum reform, developing students' integrated language skills and ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing by means of participatory activities for students will be able to help them learn from each other and gain a sense of honor and success, and thus develop their spirit of participation. Currently, as a kind of leading teaching way, participatory approach has been more and more widely implemented in the student-centered teaching practice, becoming a complement and breakthrough to traditional teaching approach. However, the study and application of participatory approach in primary English teaching is still at primary stage. It hasn't gotten widely spread in this region for lack of effective patterns and strategies that fit the fact of subject instruction. So, it is necessary and significant to introduce participatory approach into primary English classroom and it is also the need of English instruction reform at present.This thesis consists of six parts in detail:Part One: Introduction. It states the causes of the study, introduces the basic state of English teaching in primary school, the characteristics of the children in different nationalities in the local place, traditional teaching method and its problems. This part also points out the significance and necessity of the present study.Part Two: Literature review. It gives an overall review of the current teaching methods in English teaching related to participatory approach in teaching from theory and practice. Then it further gives a summery description of the research achievement on participatory approach in English classroom teaching in Linxia.Part Three: Analysis of participatory approach in teaching. The author makes a systematic exposition of participatory approach in teaching, gives its definitions from different scholars and theoretical basis, and then analyzes its principles and characteristics.Part Four: The implementation of participatory approach in teaching. First, on the basis of the basic ideas, objectives of new curriculum standard and assessment in primary English teaching, the author designs a general framework in implementing participatory approach in class. Then some normally used activities in participatory approach in English teaching in primary school are listed out. Finally, the author arranges a demonstration lesson about participatory approach in English classroom teaching.Part Five: Research procedure. It is the main part of the experiment. It puts forward the hypothesis and describes experimental methods, instruments, subjects, variables and the specific process of the experiment. Then all the collected statistical data were analyzed with T-test through SPSS (11.5).Part Six: Conclusion and suggestion. Based on the above study, a conclusion of the experiment is drawn. Meanwhile, it points out the limitation and shortcomings of the research and provides the relevant suggestions for future researchers who are interested in this field.
