Abstract/Summary:
According to narrative analysis of the villagers in a village which formed from developmental migration, the concept of"subsistence ethic"in recent rural community context of China can be understood as a system of values originated and inherited in the grass-rooted rural society. This system of values is based on the land and to secure the stable right of farming on the land of the peasants, as well as to secure the peasants satisfying their living standards from the land, which is based on the history, the culture and the community context. The major performance of the subsistence ethic is the reciprocity relationship between peasants and the grass-roots government, which is acknowledging and guaranteeing the rights and duties of each other, and is based on"human kindness", consistent with"natural justice"and out of the"law". Hence we can say that the subsistence ethic is based on and spread out around the land. Thus, differs from the emphasizing of the economic security of the land in the past discussions, this article emphasizes more on which the land is also the root of the values and the sense of security of peasants. This sense of security refers to not only the stable income for satisfying the subsistence needs of the peasants, but also the stability of the"grass-rootness", which means the cognization model and value system, and the inter-relationship style extended from which.
