As the starting point of foreign language education, the English language teaching has special pupils-the children who are learning both English and the native language at the same time. Offering the English language course starting from Grade 3 of the primary school is a significant evolution of the basic education of China in recent years, whereof the motivation is to adapt to the overall tendency of the development of the world. As a fact, some areas even start such courses from Grade 1 or 2 already.Accompanied by the ongoing practices of innovation, the educational theories have drawn much attention from teachers and researchers. More and more creative ideas have been proposed, including the Activity-Oriented Teaching Scheme (AOTS). Some teachers and researchers have investigated the topic the Activity-oriented Teaching Scheme and have some findings in this area. The AOTS may be defined as a teaching scheme which encourages pupils to actively participate in teaching and learning activities, that is, to think, to express his/her own ideas in English, to improve the sensitivity of the English language and culture. Therefore, various teaching methods such as: listening, speaking, singing, role-play are utilized in the process of AOTS. AOTS can help to achieve the objective of the course English that has been specified by the "New Regulation of English Course" i.e. "to allow student to access the English language from various channel and styles, to directly feel who the English language is utilized in practice".The classroom-based teaching, as a fundamental element of the basic education, is of high significance. A key question here is how to create various new schemes and styles for classroom-based teaching, which are able to largely encourage the students to learn. The statement of the author of this thesis is: AOTS in primary schools is a good candidate to serve such purpose. The great advantage of this scheme is to be able to help the students to become self-motivated discoverers, thus it can largely develop their various personal features. This thesis consists of six chapters, the corresponding chapters include: Introduction, Literature Review, The status quo, the general pattern and teaching strategies, Research Design, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion. A comparative experiment has been conducted, in order to show the effects of the AOTS. The results of this study reveals that: classroom-based AOTS is able to improve students' communicative competence and enhance their sensitivity of English language and culture. It is suitable for English education in primary schools, and is worthy to be promoted.
