The stayed-down students of college belong to the marginalized group who stayed down to the lower grade for their poor school performance, and special attention should be paid to their social adaptation because of their special situations. Now the research about the college students' mental health mainly focused on the freshman's social adaptation, interpersonal relationship and occupation taking, while few focused on the stayed-down students. The research aimed to investigate the characteristics of cognitive, emotional and interpersonal adaptation of the special group and the related factors to provide the deep understanding of and further empirical evidence for the intervention of the students. The social adaptation of 49 randomly selected stayed-down college students and two typical cases were interviewed by semi-structured questions and the data were analyzed, and the results indicated that, 1. over half of the students identified with the current system for the stayed-down students, however only very few students could adapt themselves very well to it, and in sum the social adaptation of stayed-down students should be intervened; 2. the social adaptation should be based on positive understanding of the experience of their being stayed down and positive emotion after their being stayed down, and interpersonal relationship could provide enough social support for them. The advice was given to the intervention of their mental health and social adaptation based on the results, including that we should pay attention to the change of the students' unreasonable cognition and the negative emotion, and should help them build harmonious interpersonal relationship with others, especially with their classmates.
