Renqing And Social Capital Of The Village

Based on Renqing and social capital, and in conjunction with the condition of an ordinary rural Guanqiao village in the center of Hubei province, the research is to study the adaptability of the measurement method of social capital in China, the country which has a unique traditional culture. The author made some conclusions on the basis of my own survey data.The result has been found that more Renqing between village community does not always leads to more social capital and not more cooperation between village community either. Indexes, such as intercommunication frequency and affairs involved, which have been usually used to measure social capital may result in wrong research conclusions that deviate from facts.The first part summarizes the background of the question, reviews the related studies. In addition, the chapter proposes the purpose, meaning and train of research, defines the key concepts such as Renqing, social capital, and states the method applied.The second part analyzes the three structural dimensionality of renqing: reciprocal cooperation, moral obligation and affection relation, and the function they operate. The author brings out that villagers can really get social capital through the traditional Renqing intercommunication. And the traditional Renqing intercommunication is useful to village integration.The purpose of the third part is to investigate the changed Renqing in Guanqiao village lives. Through face-to-face survey data, the author found that the changed village lives have lead to changed Renqing condition of Guanqiao village. The superficial Renqing has losed the function of social integration.The fourth part is to make regional comparison. Compared with guanzhong village, Xiaojing village and Guanqiao village, the author found that Renqing is not a major factor that lead to form villagers'cooperation. Self-identity between the villagers is the factor to cause village community relationship and to villagers'cooperation.The fifth part summarizes the major conclusion, propose that the unique measurement of intercommunication frequency and taking part in affairs cannot reflect the social capital of a chinese village.
