Generally speaking, the implication of map is consistent with the concepts of geomorphology, map resource, geographical textbook, photography system and so on. the different types of maps and various kinds of photographys and charts related to the geography education are all involved in it. To be specific, it mainly contains map, landscape pattern, geographical abridged general view, geographical cartogram, entity photography, remote sensing image and so on. a map is the important medium of geography education and also the main content in a geography textbook. In addtion, in view of materiality in illustration and summarization in abstraction, a map can be think a important tool for thinking. the development of space thinking ability for students is tightly related to the map teaching. It is a important orientation for development and innovation of geography education to cultivate students the ability of understanding and using different kinds of maps.The key for succesfull geography education is to study the map well. The research on how to cultivate students the ability of understanding map is actually significant for soluting the problems in map study of geograph education. Briefly, the map ability is the ability of obtaining the geographical information from map. Map ability, orientation ability of geography space and distinguishing ability of geography space layout are all around the application of map, the generalized defination of map ability is the summerization of the three ones.The educational psychology theory and cartology theory are the foundational principle of studying map in geography education. The learning methods for may study contain abserving map, analysizing map, plotting map, conning map and so on, and the strategy for map study may mainly involve to gradually cultivate the ability of map by the level of map ability, to cultivate the space thinking ability of students by modern geography informantion technique, to update the cartology system in the reform of geography textbook for middle school, to exert the advantage of visual space thinking by using map and chart in geograph eductaion, to enhance the ability of space retention and orientation of students by set up mind map, to use exploring means in map eduction and study according to the reform of geography subject, to guide and encourage students to study the map by the appraise of results, to enhance the ability of application for map in social practice, and to offer a good atomsphere for map study of high school students.The investigations concerning with the map study of high school students were done from knowing map,understanding map, applicating map, mind map, map eduction, plotting map and interpreting map in the Lanzhou 27th middle school. The willing and reqirement of students for map study are made clear basing the analysis of map education within the study of high school, and current situation and open question of map study and map ability for high school students. According to these results, the teaching experiment has been developed, the results in the eductional experiments show that the studying interest can be activated, geography thinking can be cultivated and the map ability can be enhanced remarkably for students.The following conclusion can be drew by this paper, the consciousness to map must be cultivated by continuing studty and multidimensional education mehods for improving the map ability of students, the mehods and processingof studying map of sutdents should be disciplined. In addtion, students should study out of the class and be close to natual world, which is the foundament of cultiating the space thinking and map ability. The psychology map may be paid a attention to cultivate, which results in forming the topography in the mind of stutents and improving the ability of application for map. The education methods should be updated to the combination of advantages of exploring method and attaining mehod. The geograph education should folllow the development of social and thechique by introducing the geography inforamtion technique to the class teaching, which can serve the cultivation of map ability for students much.
