| Universities and colleges are the bases of doing high-level research. As one of the basic functions of universities and colleges, research is an important part of whole country or region's science and technology power, and has important effect in science and technology advancement and the construction of universities and colleges. As an efficient way to advance the function of universities and colleges' research, research assessment is an important way to know the research actualities in whole country or region, also the useful way to promote the function of universities and colleges' research. It has practical significance of the development of society and economy, and has important value for the development whole country or region's higher education.In 1980s, with the impulse of UK government's higher education policies and the development of society, "Research Assessment Exercise" (RAE) has brought into effect. It has important effect for the development of higher education and society in UK. RAE helps the government to regulate higher education more effectively, and promote the development of the universities and colleges in UK powerfully. Indeed, there are some problems with RAE inevitably. This paper probes into RAE policies and its implement and influence, and provides some referenced experiences for the further development of research management of universities and colleges in China.This paper can be divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the reasons of thesis proposal and the status quo of this research, and defines the involved terms. The second chapter analyzes the background of the establishment of RAE. The policies of RAE and its implement have been introduced in chapter three. From positive aspects and negative aspects, the fourth chapter analyzes the influence of RAE on higher education in UK. hi the last chapter, some revelations for reference have been brought forward for the development of research management of universities and colleges in China.
