With the rapid development of modern information technology, computer technology and network technology are more and more widely applied in education; especially the campus network connecting with the internet provides rich resources for education. Network course, as the bridge between instruction and learning, usually plays three roles-teachers, teaching materials and teaching media in network instruction, which is the mainstream of modern education technology. Autonomous learning based on internet is very important for learners in this society, in which knowledge explosively increases and life-long education becomes inevitable for the people.Learning log can help learners cultivate their abilities of autonomous learning, which has been researched in traditional instruction; however, it is very rare in network courses. As a result, the author tries to develop learning log tool and apply it in network courses to help learners autonomously learn based on internet. The research can be divided into six parts mainly:1. The paper analyzes application status of network courses at home and abroad, and put forward study task: design and development of learning log tool according to the need of autonomous learning based on internet.2. In this part the paper gives theoretical basis of the system. Connotation, characteristics and theoretical foundation of autonomous learning is introduced, which is the premise and basis of learning log tool design and development.3. The paper surmises the general design of the tool in its third part. Firstly it analyzes the requirement; secondly, points out the general target of the tool design and describes the general structure of the tool according to the principle of modular design of software as well; thirdly B/S model is determined to be applied; at last the demand of hardware and software is pointed out.4. Design and realization of the tool. It mainly concludes the introduction of the related technology, the realization of the tool development-a case study of the network course: Instruction Design and Disciplinary Teaching Theory, the design idea of the main modules, and the interfaces of each module.5. Research on application of the tool. The application of the tool in the network course is introduced and analysis is made.6. The study conclusion and the shortcoming of the paper. It summarizes the design of the tool and points out that the tool still needs improving and perfecting.
