On one hand, with the rapid development of modern society it forms a special area around the central city which is called urban-rural continuum. It contains a lot of differences between the central city in many aspects such as economic, culture and population. As a result, it brings new challenges for teachers and kindergartens.On the other hand, the curriculum reform in Shanghai has come into a practical and operational stage. The kindergarten-based teaching research is an effective way for improving teachers' ability. So this study focused on the characteristics of kindergarten-based teaching research between urban-rural continuum and central city.In order to get direct information, this research selected six kindergartens in the two areas and used multiple methods including on-site observation, interview, investigation and objects analysis.It compared the characteristics of kindergarten-based teaching research including organized styles, contents, systems, headmaster's role, atmosphere and support from outside. Then this study analyzed the reasons from three aspects including children, teachers and area's environment. In the last section, it provided some suggestions for kindergarten-based teaching research on the basis of the results from five aspects.In addition, the kindergarten-based teaching research is based on different kindergartens' teachers, children and practice so there is no pattern for every kindergarten. Through the comparative study on characteristics of the kindergarten-based teaching research between the urban-rural continuum and the central city, it calls for an attitude to deal with the real existing matters relating to practice and to consider the children and their backgrounds when doing kindergarten-based teaching research.
