Study On College Student Administration Work After China's Opening-up

The college student administration mechanism refers to the interactive operation system of administration objectives, tasks, system, methods and means involved in college student administration. Scientific student administration mechanism is of great importance to produce a systematic efficiency.Chinese college student administration mechanism went through the initial stage and several evolvement phases since foundation of People's Republic of China. It was not until the middle of 1960s that the college party committee was responsible for the overall education system. In many colleges the publicity department of college party committee and league committee were in charge of administrative units of students' affairs. And the party branches were set up widely in different departments, which later changed into general party branches. Political advisors were designated for students of various grades to charge the student affairs respectively. During the "Cultural Revolution" period, college student administration was seriously disturbed and resulted in a total mess.The student administration system was reconstructed after 1978. A two-level administrative system was formed which combined the party and administrative units resulting in a much more efficient administrative work. The student administrative work was enriched and the student cultivation pattern changed from the simple knowledge-oriented education to the knowledge-and- ability combined one.Since the 1990s Chinese economic system started to change from the traditional planning economy to a socialist market economy, which brought tremendous impact on college student administration work. Most colleges have improved their student administration mechanism under the leadership of university principal and administrative panel, together with a student self-administrative system. The quality education has been widely recognized as a new education concept. Some student administration functions turned into service functions.Entering the 21st century, economic integration, information globalization and other social and economic changes have brought about big challenges to Chinese college student administration work. With increased awareness of quality education, personality and value system also became important contents of college education along with emphasis on acquirement of knowledge and professional skills. The student administration work has become much more independent with greater improvement in management mechanism, advisory mechanism, and employment mechanism, consultation mechanism.The achievements made along the transformation of Chinese college student administration work after 1978 can be concluded as follows. The administrative staff building mechanism has been greatly improved, and quality education has been widely carried out through a sounder administration mechanism. In the meantime, a relatively more independent and systematic student administration mechanism has been shaped and some student administrative theories have been concluded from practices. College student administration work has been redefined as organizing non-academic activities and extracurricular activities in order to instruct and service students and enrich their campus life and healthy growth. Two major aspects of administration work, the education and administration function have been greatly enriched and expanded. Especially, the student administrative work has expanded from a strictly "administrative" sense to a broad sense of student affair services covering consultation, financing, work-study programs and health education, etc.However, improvement is stilled called for in the following respects. Credibility education, legal education and humanitarian education are in urgent need of ideological education field. And the reform relatively lagged behind the fast pace of Chinese market economic transformation. The fundamental theory of college student affairs administration is backward compared with many overseas countries and insufficient to guide the more complicated administration reality in today's China.Future development trends of Chinese college student administration work can be summed as the following respects:In terms of education mechanism, the ideological education will be carried on and diversified education means will be adopted to strengthen the guiding function, developing sound personality and healthy development of college students.In terms of management mechanism, the principle of combining administrative function and guiding function will be further implemented to innovate the administration system with a student self-administration orientation. The incentive mechanism widely practiced overseas will become popular in the future and more influential as the major administrative means.
