Zhang Jian was a Scholar of the Qing Dinysty. Disappointed at the government authorities, he resigned from office and devoted himself to the career of local economy and social development which involved fields like industry, education, construction, agriculture, fishery, water conservancy, transportation, finance, culture, arts, philosophy, religion, social and public welfare, and so on.Zhang Jian was the pioneer of industrial education. In accordanc with the ideal of"saving the nation by industry and education"and the principle of"Education is Father and Industry is Mother", he had founded about thirty industrial educational sites of different levels, different types and different forms. He had also adovocated or subsided nearly ten school in Shanghai and other parts of Jiangsu, thus making great contributions to the rising of modern Chinese national industries and the development of education. His ideas of"industry and education affecting each other"and"complementing education with industry and reforming industry by education"not only had surpassed other educators at that time, but had a profound influence upon his successors as well. Evolved when the Chinese nation was invaded by imperialist powers and was precarious, Zhang Jian's idea of industrial education reveals how a feudal officialdom cultivated by traditional Chinese culture worked hard to realize his dream of having a powerful country. Therefore, studying Zhang Jian's idea of industrial education is historically and realistically significant.The whole thesis is thus arranged: the introduction part discusses the significance of the paper, literature review and methodology; chapter one first gives a brief account of Zhang Jian's life and then introduces the development course of modern Chinese industries by analyzing tracing the thread of Zhang Jian's thought of industrial education from six aspects; the second chapter elaborates on Zhang Jian's theory of industrial education from purpose of education, school system, specialty and curriculum, moral education, teaching management, teaching method, teaching staff and teaching objects and tracks down the origin of his thought; chapter three analyzes the historical influence and limitations of Zhang Jian's idea of industrial education; and the last part is the conclusion.
