The change in the Chinese curriculum in 2004 is vastly different to all of its predecessors, mainly because of the change in focus. Besides stressing solely on cognition, educators have found an equally important key to learning Chinese - to cultivate interests for their mother tongue, so that the love for their mother tongue will transcend through the stage of just being used as a means to get through the exams, but instead become the way to better appreciate their culture, thus developing an everlasting interest in the use of Chinese throughout their lives. The usage of the Modular Curriculum Structure includes more realistic and creative teaching materials to invoke interest in the students are integral parts of the new Chinese educational reforms. By using the avenues provided through the changes in the examination format, the introduction of technology and the training of teachers and specialist in this area, the number of environments in society and opportunities for the students to use and interact with Chinese greatly increases. By doing so, the teachers are able to develop the student's interest in Chinese language and culture from young in various areas. This is accompanied by another four aspects. They are usage of the language, recognition of words, learning to read and write as well as enjoying the learning process. In a nutshell, this research paper will penetrate the veil that surrounds the most fundamental core question of our educational reform: What is the best study and teaching method? Analysis and critique of the current education system will be comprehensively discussed in this essay. Singapore's place in this matter is very unique, partly because it has a multiracial and cultural society. From the psychological point of view, the conclusion reached is that the combinations of the new curriculum with Chinese art appreciation lessons seem to be the best and most suitable solution for students who have to start learning Chinese from its basics. Besides this, this solution can also let the students maintain their interest in Chinese language and culture for a prolonged period of time...
