| General education is a kind of ideal of higher education which can become true by setting general education curricula. At present, many universities are now attaching more importance to general education and trying to put it into practice, however, problems still exist in the general education curricula. General education curricula have many commons in different Chinese universities, which can not embody the different features and academics advantage in different universities. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss how to make the general education curricula characterized by combining different features and academics advantages in different universities.This thesis consists of five parts.The first part is a general introduction, which explains the purpose and significance of choosing this topic. The author makes a general description of some scholars'finding in the field of general education and define the concept of general education and general education curriculum.The second part is about the statement of the history and development of general education. The general education comes from the liberal education. During the process, Aristotle's, Newman's and Hutchins's idea of liberal education play an important role. In China, general education as a educational ideal shook between general education and specialized education from the end of Qing Dynasty to the early 80s'in 20 century. Till the mid-term of 90s'in 20 century, general education was paid close attention.The third part, the thesis states the reform of general education in Chinese universities. Taking general education curriculum in Wuhan University and Beijing University as an example, the author compares and analyzes them, and points out there still exist some problems of general education curriculum provision, such as unreasonable in general education curriculum, a lack of close attention on general education curriculum and no uniqueness in general education curriculum.The fourth part, according to the analysis of the problems existing in general education curriculum, the author suggests the current general education curriculum should be reformed in order to carry out the ideal of general education. Making general education curriculum unique has its necessity and feasibility. The necessity of making general education curriculum unique includes the theoretic foundation of the reform of the ideal of universities and the practical requirement of the social development and the training of the creative talents. In the later section of this part, the author states the feasibility of making general education curriculum unique from two aspects, including the needs of divers talents in the society and the practical proof of making general education curriculum unique in other universities.The fifth part, the author points out some strategies to realize the characteristics of general education curriculum. Firstly, three basic principles of setting general education curriculum should be obeyed. Secondly, the universities should reconsider the general education by a particular view of talents. Thirdly, the universities should establish some institutions to guarantee the quality of general education. If done like these, making general education curriculum unique can be realized. |
