With the arrival of knowledge economic times, characterized by the"knowledge-explosion","information explosion", and"life-time learning", the talents that China requests for its economic and social development have been shifted from knowledge-oriented ones into ability-oriented ones.Almost every educational researcher and practitioner is pondering over the following questions: What kind of education do we really need? What is the soul of education? And what kind of teaching model can meet the coming challenge? Giving the students the ability to recognise, work, live together and survive, which is the soul of education, is also our teachers'duty.The new reform on curriculum materials beginning in 2001 has emphasized the important role that students play in learning activity. It puts forward that the main participation of the students is the starting point where they can have an all-round development, while the development of the individual can be achieved only by this active and various activities participation. It is also the basic principle for the quality education of physics in China's middle schools, the basic framework of thought for principal education and for improving the actual effect on education.The essential purpose of activity teaching is to change the current teacher-oriented teaching pattern that is characterized by the fact that teachers teach mainly by infusing their students with knowledge and to build a new one where the teaching process is based on students'self-guided activities and active research. Thus, by all these various practivities, the students'qualities can be improved as a whole, including the spirit, awareness of creation, and ability to practice.As far as activity is concerned, it includes man's development; the essence of education.It is a basic category of education and an approach to understanding educational phenomena. Activity teaching guided by the thought of promoting development by activities is the very teaching method that can best fulfill our educational responsibilities.There are six chapters in this thesis.Chapter One deals with the origins and development of the thought of activity teaching. It gives the definition of"activity", as well as the concept of"development by activity"from the perspective of philosophy. Meanwhile, various understanding of different educational scholars and the viewpoints of the authors are also put forward in this chapter.Chapter Two is concerned with the current situation of the application of activity teaching to physics in senior middle schools. The author gives her own definition of activity teaching of physics on the basis of massive surveys, literature research and action research. Then, she analyzes the necessity and possibility of activity teaching of physics and summarizes the main models of it. Furthermore, some simple or concrete teaching cases are also provided in order to help the teachers. It is the key part and the creative part in the present thesis.Chapter Three gives a general picture of the current situation of activity teaching of physics in senior high school.Chapter Four puts forward the necessity and feasibility of activity teaching of physics in senior high school.Chapter Five describes the specific forms of activity teaching of physics in senior high school. It mainly summarized some common difficulties in activity teaching of physics in China's senior schools, and called for the change of the teachers'idea to strengthening the sense of educational duty.Chapter Six puts forward some suggestions and expectation for the activity teaching.
