The martial art,as a representative of the Chinese traditional culture,was greatly influenced by the Confucianism,"Character First" idea is the embodiment of Confucianism and social morality in martial art,different schools of which have their own modes and criteria as strict requirements and regulations in morality and martial arts practice and teaching.In the heritage,of martial arts,a traditional teaching method is always employed,which involves the teaching process of "demonstrating","imitating","examining".In the process,what the teacher does is only to teach the student mechanically to finish the teaching task,and the students are totally manipulated by the teacher, unable to their own potential well.Nowadays,in the educational circle throughout the world,"to learn how to study" is the slogan on improving student's quality of study.To study the subject in the teaching process,and to enable students to grasp methods of study is the main trend of modern international education.In accordance with that,the core of "Competence Education" in china is to enhance all students' basic competence, respect students' initiative and personality and thus wok out their potentialities.The Subject—Pattern teaching method stresses the comprehensive improvement of all students' competence.The aim is to make students become a new generation with sense of initiative,creative thinking,cooperative mind,social ability,extensive knowledge,healthy emotion and good behaviors.There have been some researches on this aspect in PE departments and some achievements have been reached;however,the study on the concrete teaching process and the evaluation system of all the teaching practice is still not deep going.This paper presents how to make use of subject—pattern in teaching gymnastics as an obligatory course.Based on modern educational theories,adhering to the law of gymnastics teaching,and applying some scientific methods such as comparison and contrast,the author explores and effective method to improve students' gymnastic techniques and skills,and develop their initiative at the same time,providing with theoretical basis.The provide prevalence of martial art in college university.The conclusion is as the following:First,to make use of videos in teaching,encourage students to participate in evaluation,create favorable study conditions so as to make most students reach the requirement of " being able to explain, display and teach".Second,the subject—pattern has got some achievements in improving students' initiative sense and actions,to some extent and students' participatory and creativity also have been strengthened.Third,testing can promote students' sense of initiative and questionnaires play some role in evaluating students' initiative and they are relatively easy to be carried out.
