The phenomena of nonstandard and inaccurate translation of proper names of sports have been long existed in media,and it seems to become worse.The quality of translation and communication effect would be debased,the image and the authority of media would be degraded if it could not be corrected.The thesis analyses the mistakes on proper names of sports made by domestic main media such as sports channel of sohu website and sports weekly in the form of case study with relative theories of translation and communication in order to find the solution to it, so that the quality of translation and communication effect could be improved.Proper name refers to particular being or thing,so the translation of it should be unique.From the point of view of theory translation, the standardization of translation of proper name should be implemented to avoid different meanings.Meanwhile,translation belongs to intercultural communication,which is more complicated than ordinary communication.Translator plays an important role because he encodes and decodes repeatedly during intercultural communication,and it is cultural factors rather than language differences that hinder the intercultural communication.Cultural information is easy to be distorted,lost and added during the intercultural communication.In order to solve the problems of the translation of proper name of sports,such measures should be taken:relative government institutes should co-operate to stipulate rules;translation principles should be emphasized;the translation of person' s name and place name should refer to the practice of Translated Name Office of Xinhua News Agency and Chinese Place name Committee;original name should be added to the translation with brackets;translator should possess strong cultural consciousness.
