In the learning society of this new century, only people with lifelong learning ability and independent development capacity can adapt to our society and create the future. A new round of basic education curriculum reform of our country puts emphasis on making students to meet the needs of lifelong learning. The reform enable students to form positive learning attitude and pay attention to training students' independence and autonomy, it also promote students to study positively and individually under the guidance of teachers. "Autonomous learning" is the inevitable consequence of quality education, because quality education regards people's development as the core, and emphasize that students are the subjects in cognitive activities. As an important component of education of science education, new physics curriculum puts much importance on students' autonomous study ability and pay attention to training their initiative and exploring consciousness. So in physics teaching, teachers must cultivate students to study actively and obtain knowledge independently.Besides,. students must be resp ected as the subjects in study process.In this article, we select three schools of Hunan province as samples and research on the currency of students' independent leaning ability in physics learning, adopting questionnaire method. The contents of questionnaire involves students' interest, attitude, study habits, study strategies and the space and time of autonomous learning etc. The result shows that some middle school students do not have strong enough independent learning ability in physics learning. They are lack of initiative to think about and solve problem, and they don't participate in studying consciously and get used to accept knowledge passively. According to relevant theory and the currency of independent study in physics learning, we proposed some cultivation strategies, including strengthening guidance on students' interest, using estimation means appropriately, updating the concept of classroom, creating independent learning environment etc. By our practical research, these strategies can in a certain degree make students to know how to learn and learn gladly, the strategies also strengthen enthusiasm and initiative of their study and improve their ability of autonomous learning.
