The rapid development and wide application of information technology (IT) have promoted technological progress in every walk of life. They have also brought the vigorous development of new technological revolution and new demands for talents. Certainly IT has a profound influence on education, furthermore it has presented a huge challenge to our country's elementary education—Primary and secondary education. In this case, the application of IT based on multimedia computers and network communication has demonstrated the broad prospects for development in the geography teaching. Based on this, this thesis analyses the new situation of high school geography teaching earnestly under IT environment , relates the high school geography teaching material closely, selects large numbers of geography teaching examples, and unifies the author's practice of high school geography teaching fully. The author attempts to explore the creative use of geography teaching resources with the application of IT, update teaching methods and means, optimize the geography teaching process, and train students' learning abilities according to the features of geographical course in the information age.This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 deals with an introduction and the literature review, mainly on the research background, research development and research methods.In Chapter 2, the theoretical basis for the research is described in detail. First the definition of IT, then description of the theoretical basis for the application of IT to high school geography teaching is introduced.In Chapter 3, the effect on the application of IT to high school geography teaching is discussed. According to the features of geographical course, the author presents some advantages of application of IT in five aspects as follows: it benefits the development of learning resources and riches geographical learning contents ; it benefits the observation of geographical phenomena and the understanding of geographical concepts s as well as features ; it benefits the performance of geographical process and the grasp of geographical rules ; it is advantageous to the demonstration of geography experiments and the understanding of general knowledge for geography ; it is also advantageous to the establishment of learning situation and energy of geographical learning process.Chapter 4 is the main part of this thesis, in which the author attempts to explore the practical application modes of IT to high school geography teaching. First it introduces three common application modes with emphasis: group—multimedia teaching mode,independence—monitoring mode and cooperation—investigation learning mode. Then the teaching procedure, the applicable scope and the application examples are discussed respectively.The last part discusses some problems in the application of IT to high school geography teaching. It introduces the misunderstandings and problems that we must pay attention to in the application of IT to high school geography teaching.
