Security staffs in colleges and universities shoulder the sponsibility to maintain public security and stability,and promote social harmony and peace.As college security work is becoming more and more important,and the safety problems are getting more and more seriuos,the security staffs have to face a more complex task and take on greater responsibility.All this leads to long-term work overload and high psychological stress,and their physio-psychological health or even lives are under threat at any time. Therefore,it is necessary to have a thorough knowledge of the situation of the security staff's job stress and burnout,get the firsthand data about them,and thus find possibles solutions.Based on the literature review,open questionnaire and expert opinions,the author proposed the concept model of the security staff's job stress,and worked out the preliminary questionnaire on it.With the reliability and validity tested,the formal questionnaire was developed.A confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) of the questionnaire was conducted and a series of methods were employed to test the reliability and validity. And then using the questionnaire and the Chinese version of Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey(MBI-GS),the author initially explored the current situation and features of the security staff's work stress and burnout,and their correlations.The results of the research show that:(1) The self-made Questionnaire on Security Staff's Work Stress in Colleges and Universities has good internal consistency reliability,split-half reliability,retest reliability,content validity and construct validity.The factor analysis shows that the security staff's job stress includes five aspects:pressure of time limit,perplexing,safety, economy and family.The questionnaire provides an assessment tool and a reference in explanation for exploring the characteristics and laws of the security staff's job stress in colleges and universities.It can be used as a relevant assessment tool.(2) The mean values of the five aspects vary from high to low:pressure of perplexing,economy,safety,time limit and family.This shows that the main pressure of the security staff comes from the pressure of perplexing and economy.The differences of the other three kinds of pressure indicate that they are rising with the growth of working age.The analysis shows that the pressure of the security staff has no significant difference in gender and marriage.The security staffs with the working age of 5-20 years work under significantly higher pressure than other age groups.The pressure of the security cadres is much higher than that of the employed security men.The pressure of the division chiefs is much greater than that of the laborial staff.In terms of education,there is significant difference between the staff with bachelors or above and the staff with senior high school graduation diplomas or under,whereas there is no siginificant difference between the staff from senior high schools and those with lower levels.The averages of the three different education levels vary from high to low:those with bachelors or above,from senior high schools and under.The averages of the job burnout elements vary from high to low:reduced personal accomplishment,emothional exaustion,and cynicism.It shows that the major problems of job burnout arise from reduced personal accomplishment and emothional exaustion. There is not significant difference of job burnout in terms of working age,marital status and gender.The managerial staffs have higher levels of job burnout than the laborial staff.The security cadres experience higher levels of burnout than the outside security men.The staffs with bachelors or above suffer from higher levels of burnout than those with other educational qualifications.(3) There is a significantly moderate correlation between the total scores measured by the self-made questionnaire and MBI-GS.The higher pressure the security staffs have,the higher degree of job burnout,and vice versa.There is significant difference between the score of the pressure of perplexing,safety and family and the total score of MBI-GS,however,there is no significant difference between the score of the pressure of time limit and economy and the total score of MBI-GS.The degrees of job pressure and burnout of the division chiefs are much greater than those of the laborial staff.The security cadres have higher levels of job stress and burnout than the outside security men.The staffs with higher levels of education have higher degrees of job stress and burnout than those with lower levels of education.
