Harvard University is a world-renowned first-class institution of higher education, whose advanced management, first-class academic and high-quality talents for the world is highly esteemed. Harvard teacher management system has distinct characteristics of Harvard University, which provides an institutional guarantee for Harvard University to construct high-quality teachers. Studying on Harvard University teacher management system can solve a series of problems which exist in our country's university teacher management and put forward some ideas about constructing high-quality teachers and world-class university for our country.Based on text analysis of Harvard University "Faculty handbook", this paper studies Harvard University teacher management system from five parts. In the introductory part, this paper analyzes in-depth about the previous studies of this subject and comes up some studies which surpassed the previous studies; summarizes the main contents and functions of "Faculty handbook"; and defines some basic conceptions in the paper. In the second chapter, this paper studies the formation and development of Harvard University teacher management system, which includes three stages: the start-up period, the modern college period and the becoming a world-class university period. In the third chapter, this paper discusses and summarizes the contents of Harvard University teacher management system through text analysis of "Faculty handbook". Based on the text analysis of "Faculty handbook", the fourth chapter summarizes characteristics and shortcomings of Harvard University teacher management system. The characteristics include completely implementing teacher appointment system; protecting academic freedom for teachers; offering academic leave for teachers, paying attention to academic exchanges; ensuring mobility of teachers, giving fresh impetus to teachers; a well-established and efficient monitoring mechanism to protect legitimate rights and interests of teachers. The shortcomings include some drawbacks in tenure tract position and promotion mechanism which is called "up or out". In the fifth chapter, this paper focuses on enlightenments got from Harvard University teacher management system, which includes three aspects: the implementation of teacher self-management system in accordance with the law; advocating academic-oriented policy, hiring teacher in a strict way; constructing a reasonable and dynamic teacher in and out mechanism. Finally, the conclusion part discusses the practical significance of studying Harvard University teacher management system, and stresses that Harvard University teacher management is the key reference for us to construct high-level teacher staff and world-class university in China.
