Talent is the core competition among all economical and technological competitions in the 21st century. With the rise of society towards a trend of learning, there are new requirements from society in terms of teachers' career development and lifelong learning. It actually takes time to switch the way of implementing new teaching theories and methodologies from static to dynamic. The purpose of continuing education of teachers is to renovate theories, improve professionalism and adopt to dynamic environment. Therefore, focusing on teachers' continuing education is an inevitable trend of social development as well as the common measures that are adopted by most advanced countries on current education strategies.This thesis, which focuses on the continuing education of biology teachers in Shanghai senior high school, will do an in-depth research both practically and theoretically. The thesis consists of five parts. Part 1 is to pose the question that expounds the background, the contents, the object and the method of the research. Part 2 is to apply the continuing education theory which is based on the theory of lifelong education, the teachers' specialization and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to analyze the affect to the teachers' continuing education. Part 3 is to review the past and the current situation of the teachers' continuing education both at home and abroad which give us several lessons. Part 4 is to conduct an investigation of basic qualities and continuing education of biology teachers in Shanghai senior high school by means of questionnaires and interviews. The research shows that the professional quality of the teachers needs to be furthered. Besides, the lack of concern and support from the department concerned in continuing education of biology teachers in senior high school has caused teachers' dissatisfaction in training types and contents, the teaching staff and so on. Part 5 is the discussion and suggestion. With the aim of developing the specialization of teachers, further analysis and improving suggestions are required by the current situation of biology teachers' continuing education, thus improving the quality of the teachers' continuing education as well as the overall quality of biology teachers.
