The education career in Xiangxiang region has been developing rapidly since the reform and opening up. Especially in the 1990s,its education development level is always in the forefront in Hunan province. It can be said that the development history of Xiangxiang region is the miniature of the education development in central China's rural areas since the reform and opening up. It has high practical significance and academic value to research on the development history of its Compulsory education, to summarize the achievement and to point out the weakness. This article is divided into five parts except the introduction and the epilogue.The first part is the education development status of Xiangxiang region before the reform and opening up. This part introduces Xiangxiang's geography and history. It reviews Xiangxiang's development status briefly from the Southern Song Dynasty to the reform and opening up.The second part is the development history of Xiangxiang's Compulsory education from 1978 to 1985.The development history is manly divided into two stages:the one is that the elementary and secondary school education been fully consolidated, and the other is elementary education popularization stage.The third part is the development history of Xiangxiang's compulsory education. It is manly divided into three stages: Comprehensive construction, the realization of "the two bases" (1986-1997), consolidation of the achievement of the Comprehensive construction, promoting various education reform (1998-2004), learning and practicing the scientific concept of development and realizing Xiangxiang education's sustainable development (2004-2008) The forth part is the achievement and the weakness of Xiangxiang's compulsory education since the reform and opening up. According to compare the education development of Xiangxiang before the reform and opening up with that after it, this part summarizes the achievement and four historic transformations, and points out nine questions of the rapid development of the town and insufficient development of the rural area.The last part is the some suggestions to the compulsory education development of Xiangxiang. It is suggested that increasing the input of Xiangxiang's compulsory education, establishing and perfecting service remote mountainous area incentive mechanism, renewing the education idea of rural compulsory education, and laying emphasis on characteristic education should be done.
