A Study On The Characteristics And Its Related Facotrs Of University Students' Character Strength

Objective: to investigate the university students'the characteristics of character strength and the Trans-Culture comparison; (2) to verify the supposition of positive psychology etiology; (3) to study the related factors to university students'character strength.Object and Methods: Selecting 502 undergraduate Medical Department students (06, 07 level) of Soochow University, provides questionnaires of Value In Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS), Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), Cattell's 16 Personality Factor (16PF), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short From (CTQ-SF), Egma Minnen av Bardndosnauppforstran (EMBU), all questionnaires are collected at the scene; Selected 60 mental patients from Suzhou Guangji Hospital, tested one by one with the accompany of the doctors and nurses through VIA-IS. Inputs the VIA-IS data both from University Students'and the patients to the American VIA researching system, the feedback result is provided by the VIA project group, all questionnaire data inputs the SPSS17.0 software package, carrying on descriptive analysis, T-test, ANOVA analysis, Spearman correlation analysis and regression analysis.Results: (1) university students'average score of the 24 character strength from 3.25 (spirituality) to 3.93 (honesty), the most prominent five items respectively are: Honesty (3.93±0.40), love (3.91±0.48), fairness (3.90±0.47), kindness (3.86±0.46) and gratitude (3.82±0.52); (2) for the 24 character strength, Chinese men make a score from 3.22 (spirituality)~3.96 (honesty), the English scores from 2.77 (spirituality)~3.95 (judgment), Chinese men scores higher, and the Chinese women scores from 3.19 (perspective)~3.93 (love), the English female is from 2.90 (spirituality)~3.97 (kindness). The scores are almost the same, as well as the graphic display tendency; (3) there is a remarkable sex difference (p< 0.05) among university students in the 8 items such as appreciation of beauty, bravery, prudence…; just on the humor, only child scores (3.65±0.56) obviously higher than the non-only child (3.56±0.57); just on the curiosity, students from city family scores obviously higher(3.62±0.61) than the countryside students (3.50±0.54); just on the social intelligence, those from different economic condition homes make a significant difference (p< 0.05, F=3.52); The family structure difference also makes a difference on university student's character strength in the appreciation of beauty, gratitude, perspective and social intelligence;(4) compared with the worse psychological health students, the good psychological health students share a significant score in 10 character strength such as bravery, forgiveness, honesty, hope and so on (p< 0.05); mental patients scores obviously lower than the university students (p< 0.05) on 7 character strength such as appreciation of beauty, love, the hope and so on; (5) regression analysis indicates that the sex, the family structure, the emotional abuse and the emotional neglect, the parents′emotion warm understanding and the personality factors have the forecast function regarding the character strength, total explanation amount of variation from 10.1%-17.2%.Conclusions: (1) university students'character strength develops in the medium level also balanced; (2) character strength distribution has the Trans-Culture uniformity; (3) different subgroup university students'character strength has no obvious difference; (4) character strength flaw (or attenuation) is the root of psychological disorder (or barrier); (5) the formation and the development of character strength is affected by inheritance as well as environment, mainly including the sex, the family structure, the childhood traumatic experience, the parents'raising way and the personality factors.
