| Secondary school students are in a crucial period of physical and mental development, in a period of career exploration and career development. In the basic education stage, examination-oriented education is in a powerful position, on the other hand, government, society, school, parents and teachers do not pay enough attention to career counseling, these result in separation among school education, students' real life and employment. The concrete manifestation is students' career ability, professional awareness and occupational skills are difficult to adapt to the changes of society. To change this situation, school must transfer the traditional examination-oriented education to quality education, improve the overall quality of students, and strengthen career counseling in basic education.Western countries carry out career counseling comparatively early, and accumulate abundant experiences. But secondary school career counseling in Canadian is more mature, and recognized widely by the international community, therefore, the study of career counseling in Canada can provide us some experience for reference to improve our secondary school students'career counseling.Based on previous studies and theories of career counseling, the author outlines the trend briefly that is career counseling will be more specific and technical, and then introduces the methods of career counseling as well as the methods to different youth 'groups. For a better understanding of career counseling in secondary school students, the author makes junior students'career counseling in Saskatchewan as an example to analyze the goal, content and approach of career counseling of 6-9 years in the third part of this paper. Finally, through the analysis and comparison, the author summarizes the characteristics and experience of secondary school career counseling practice in Canada. Moreover, in order to improve our career counseling, the author puts forward some suggestions. These suggestions include the follows. The government should establish and improve the curriculum and managing systems, provide necessary fund and specialized train. People should change ideas to strengthen social concerns and cooperation of all the parties. The school should integrate career counseling into curriculum to open a substantive career counseling programs, or integrate career counseling into other courses and activities, in addition, improve the overall quality of students and guide according to students' uniqueness and needs to achieve the goal of quality education. |
