With the deepening of China's reform and opening up and strengthening of the globalization, the scale of higher education expands unprecedented. But at the same time, higher education also faces serious challenges. On the one hand, the quality of cultivating college students'declines after the expansion of enrollment, on the other hand, China's economic structure and industrial structure adjust. The development of colleges and universities face an unprecedented impact, which makes the advantages and disadvantages of presidential leadership more important. The principal, as the manager and leader of university, is a practicer of implementing the reform policy of national education, and further determines whether the educational reform carries out smoothly. Therefore, strengthening the study on traits of presidential leadership has greater theoretical and practical significance.The innovation of this study is: firstly, building an analytical framework of the traits of presidential leadership and the university change; secondly, obtaining conclusion with theoretical value and practical significance by using the analytical framework; thirdly, deepening the study of Peking University's school history and principal Fu Sinian; Fourthly, proposing countermeasures and suggestions for the enhancement of the traits of presidential leadership.The paper is divided into four parts:Part I: introduction. First of all, it introduces the reasons and settings for the study; secondly, introduces the study of traits of presidential leadership at home and abroad; then, introduces the ideas and methods of this study, etc; finally, defines several related concepts. Part II: theoretical basis and analytical framework. It introduces mainly the theory of Traits of Leadership and the theory of Organizational Change, and on this basis establishes analytical framework of traits of presidential leadership and the university change: firstly, analyzing the leadership issues, internal and external environment of university in a certain stage, especially bottlenecks of university development, the status of university in higher education's competition, as well as the relations between university and society, governments, especially the relations between university and educational administrative departments and so on. Secondly, it analyzes the will of getting leadership positions. It can be divided into a sense of responsibility, initiative, a high willingness of leadership and high expectations for success, and so on, from the perspective of the driving force of accessing to positions of leadership. Thirdly, it analyzes the urgent events and traits of leadership in a certain stage of university change. These events are the key events related to the survival of the university and principal. The proper settlement of these events is the basis of the university's reform obtaining success and the principal's career extending. Fourthly, it analyzes the deep-seated events and leadership traits in a certain stage of the university change. These events relate to the fundamental change and long-term interests of university, often including the infrastructure of school, the construction of talent and teachers, the strategic position and choice of university, construction of majors and subjects, and so on.Partâ…¢: case and analysis. Firstly, it combines a close link of Fu Sinian with the Peking University; secondly, analyzes the internal and external environment, the reasons and the principal wish of Fu Sinian's being appointed; finally, analyzes the traits of leadership of Fu Sinian as the principal of Peking University, from the perspective of his contribution for the change of Peking University. It is mainly analyzed from several following cases: firstly, handling matters of recovering Peking University; secondly, abandoning the pseudo- faculty; thirdly, dealing with December first Movement; fourthly, extending the disciplines of subjects and employing well-known professors.Part IV: conclusions and recommendations. It summarizes the main conclusions of this study and proposes some suggestions and countermeasures of selecting principal of university, enhancing traits of leadership, as well as follow-up study. This study suggests that the traits of leadership can be divided into three major dimensions: physical and psychological traits, traits of motivation, ability of leadership. The measures of enhancing traits of leadership: firstly, implementing the spirit of lifelong learning to enhance the traits of leadership; secondly, cultivating the skills of systematical thinking; thirdly, strengthening moral cultivation and enhancing charisma; fourthly, casting excellent psychological quality.The result of this study can provide reference for principal's self-check and promoting the efficiency of leadership; can be used by universities and administrative departments as the of assessing the candidates for principal; and provide theoretical support for the following scholars to construct evaluation chart of principal's ability.
