On The Narrative Sentences In Modern Chinese

Condensed sentence is a new kind of syntax in modern Chinese, whose appearancemakes Chinese expression more flexible and changeable. Condensed structurefeatures traits both of simple sentence and complex sentence. However, no matterhow it varies there maintains a common principle. In this essay the author would tryto find out how it came out, developed and evolved from the earth, then conclude,categorize it and analyze its lingual function in Chinese.Academia tends to accept that condensed sentence is a simplified, contractedstructure of complex sentence. That’s why it was called condensed complex sentence.Therefore, fundamentally, condensed sentence is a transformed complex sentence.Based on the train of thought, by analyzing simple, complex and condensed sentencerespectively, the author would try to uncover the uniqueness of the condensedstructure. Further, the author’s inversed deduction brought few questions out--Can allregular condensed structures (wiped out uniqueness) be restored to complex ones?What kind of condensed sentences can do, what cannot. Since condensed sentencecame from complex sentence, can we say all kinds of complex ones are capable oftranscending to condensed form? If not, are there any excluded odds? How can wecategorize different form of condensed sentence? When both forms imply the sameconnotation, how we apply them properly in different ways?To catch the resolution for all above, grasping the process of the transformation(complex to condensed)is the key. It can be considered as simplification. Condensedsentence and complex sentence both imply multiple semantic, but the fundamentaldifference lies in the form of sentence, phonetic pause and connective. This paper alsoembarked on three aspects above to discuss. Focus on sentence structure, condensedsentences, which is usually simple sentence form, will omit some syntax elements. Bycontrast, complex sentence if omitted any syntax elements are unwillingly to expressthe original meaning of the sentence. Punctuation does not exist in condensedsentence. But if there is no punctuation in complex, it may not comply with thenormal language habits. Conjunction, in condensed sentence there is no place in oraround the predicate structure for it. However, complex sentence without conjunctionwould make itself confusing in semantics except for compound or causative sentence.In summary, compressed sentence and complex sentence do have some relationshipbetween each other, but not all form of complex sentence can be condensed. On thecontrary, the entire condensed sentence can be extended to complex sentence, whetherby supplementing syntax elements, using punctuation, adding conjunction or all aboveat the same time. It can make the condensed sentence restored to its complex formwith congruent meaning or nearly. Doesn’t matter there’s still few rare exception.Therefore, classification of condensed sentences can be done in reference to theclassification of complex sentence. According to the logical association condensedsentence can be assorted into nine categories, on which the analysis and discussion arestandardized. The next problem is its application in daily life. In essence language is all aboutinterpersonal communication, on this point the development of condensed sentenceprofit from its own convenience in actual application. Various contextual stylesrequire different syntactical structures, and condensed sentence mainly exist incolloquialism and literatures. It’s simple syntax structure but inclusive meaning let itcaters to the social talks and language arts requirements. Yet at the same time, its traitsmake itself call for more support from context of situation to manifest its wholesemantics meaning. Based on mentioned, formal documents, announcements andother written files are not suitable for applying condensed sentence.Anyhow, condensed sentence is a new comer in syntax, which requires moreendeavor for research.
