Since 60s, the alternative art space had a long history of development; it is becoming the unusual exhibition site during the process of revolution of art exhibition in European and American countries. The 90s witnessed rapid development of alternative art space in every region of Asia, China is no exception, of course. Alternative art space played a crucial role in the past decades:firstly, it is a birthplace for new trend, also a test field for practicing new theories. Secondly, it is also a spontaneous organization that competes with main art gallery mechanism and commercial art market. In the trend of renovation, alternative art space from all over the world act even more important role. As an important force in supporting and promoting experiment and avant-garde art exploration, alternative art space, on one hand needs to keep an independent position in order to get out of the control of art market and funders, on the other hand must be sensitive for interaction with art activities and art groups.Like other kinds of arts, from daily administration to exhibition, from art promotion to audience expansion, alternativeart space will differ in responding of different policies and investment environment.Some of the alternative art spaces are subsidized by government; some are by business while others are by artists themselves. As an important part of art ecology, they require more improvement of policies and active construction made by them to get further development.In this article, we choose alternative art space of Hong Kong as our research objects, talking about its development way in the view of system frame, policy background and self-construction, intending to provide example for similar space in Chinese mainland on its policies and management. We expect to provide intellectual support to cultural system reform undergoing in China, especially the reform and development ofnon-profit art organizations.
