As Chinese and western culture undergo continuous exchanges, the spread of western philosophy in China is growing and a growing number of Chinese scholars take up translating the works of western philosophy. Based on the English-Chinese translation in Chapter 4 of The Great Equal Society: Confucianism, China and the 21 st Century, which is co-authored by two renowned philosophers —Kim Young-oak and Kim Jung-kyu, this report describes and concludes the whole translation process and translation methods for specific content. Chapter 3 is the core part of this report, the author analyzes translation cases from three aspects, including Confucianism and Confucian contents, and some related philosophical views and figures of speech in philosophical works. Especially for some abstract philosophical terms, the author sums up strategies of translation such as “the complete representation of the Confucian contents”, conversion, literal translation, free translation and others. Through this translation practice, the author hopes to offer some reference for domestic translation work of the western philosophical works. |
