At present, inadequate attention has been paid to the translation of legal academic papers, as compared to the rapid development of the translation of contracts, legal documents, legal writings and other legal texts. After translating the legal academic paper named Definite and Substantive Reliance, the author makes in-depth analyses of the syntactic phenomena in the paper, including that-clauses, participial structures, passive sentences and other relatively long and complicated sentences. The author follows the principle of consistency and simplicity during the translation and puts forward that legal papers can be translated by way of some strategies involving the segmentation and reconstruction of sentences, amplification and omission, shifting of emphasis, change from passive sentences to active ones, etc. The author holds the hope that the methods and strategies discussed in the translation report can be useful references for the future translation of the legal papers in China.
